How To Clean and Keep Your Favorite Batik Dress - Batik is perceived as a symbol for Indonesia, since it is a true cultural heritage which has run from generations. This particular traditional cloth has managed to establish its own name and reputation in the world, and even though it is a traditional signature of Indonesia, but everybody can practically wear it to any occasion such as weddings, parties, and for your daily work. 

With all kinds of occasion you can wear Batik, this of course will set your clothes or dress to eventually have the look of worn out or simply catches dirt from your everyday activities. Different from the other kinds of cloth, Batik requires a specific way of cleaning and keeping it. This will be more important understanding that Batik is a delicate piece of material, especially if your favorite Batik is one that is made from silk or any other expensive fabric. 

Here are some things you need to know to make sure that you treat this piece of cloth properly, so you can keep it in its best condition for a long period of time.

1. Remember to use only special liquid designed for Batik washing. You can easily find it in the market or where you can purchase Batik, because usually the store also provides it. Another option, you can try washing your Batik dress with the regular hair shampoo that you use. Mix your hair shampoo with some water, and make sure the shampoo has dissolved well in the water before you dip your dress in it. 

2. A traditional way also worth a try to make sure your Batik will maintain its condition is to use Lerak which is a kind of fruit, or take the leave of Dilem, which is a kind of plant. Squeeze the Lerak fruit or Dilem leave until you see them forming bubbles, wet your dress, and you're ready to have your Batik clean. The secret of this traditional way is that the scent of the fruit or leave will keep away moths to destroy your Batik. 

3. Only wash your Batik when it is really necessary, such as food stain, and remember not to use normal detergent you use to wash other clothes. Simply soak your Batik in warm water, if it is really dirty just use your body wash , or scrub an orange peel to the area with stain. 

4. Do hand-washing and not machine-washing . 

5. Do not squeeze-dry the clothes and avoid direct sunlight. Let it dry by itself inside a room.

6. Pull the edges of the fabric to make sure it will have a smooth surface when drying. 

7. Do not iron the clothes, but if you must, place a piece of cloth on your semi - wet Batik so the iron heat will not touch it directly. 

8. Cover your Batik with a a piece of paper if you would like to spray some cloth-freshener.  

9. Do not spray perfume directly to your Batik, especially the ones from silk and natural coloring. 

10. Keep your Batik inside a plastic bag to keep away the moths and do not use camphor or any strong scented materials nearby as it may damage the fabric. 

Another useful tip to keep away the moths is to place some pepper inside a tissue paper and keep it in the same place your Batik is, or use scented root after you dip it in hot water twice and dry it well. Those are some ways to clean and keep your Batik clothes so it will always look in good condition.
